The company operates through three reportable segments. The credit sensitive strategies segment invests in credit risk transfer arrangements, subordinate and credit-linked mortgage-backed securities, and distressed loans. The interest rate sensitive strategies segment focuses on mortgage servicing rights, agency mortgage-backed securities, structured products including interest-only and principal-only stripped securities, and senior non-agency mortgage-backed securities. The correspondent production segment serves as an intermediary between lenders and capital markets by purchasing, pooling, and reselling newly originated prime credit quality loans either directly or as mortgage-backed securities.

As of year-end 2025, total debt was approximately $19.1 billion with a debt-to-equity ratio of 10.1:1. PMT has no direct employees, with all senior officers employed by PFSI and its affiliates. Loan production and servicing activities are performed by PennyMac Loan Services, LLC, which serviced approximately $226.8 billion in unpaid principal balance as of December 31, 2025. The company qualifies as a REIT for federal income tax purposes and maintains an exclusion from regulation as an investment company under the Investment Company Act of 1940.
