What SCOTTS MIRACLE-GRO CO does

In the company’s own words

Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NASDAQ: SMG) operates as the leading marketer of branded consumer lawn and garden products in North America through its website at scottsmiraclegro.com. The company traces its heritage to 1868 when O.M. Scott founded the original business in Marysville, Ohio, establishing what would become a foundational company in consumer lawn care. Through strategic acquisitions including the 1995 merger with Stern's Miracle-Gro Products and the 1999 acquisition of the Ortho brand, Scotts Miracle-Gro has assembled a portfolio of iconic brands recognized across the industry.

The company operates through three reportable segments: U.S. Consumer, Hawthorne, and Other. The U.S. Consumer segment comprises the core lawn and garden business in the United States, while Hawthorne represents the indoor and hydroponic gardening operations. The Other segment primarily includes Canadian consumer lawn and garden business. The company's product portfolio spans lawn care, gardening and landscape, hydroponic hardware and growing environments, lighting systems, and pest controls marketed under brands including Scotts, Miracle-Gro, Ortho, Tomcat, General Hydroponics, Gavita, Botanicare, and Mother Earth.

Scotts Miracle-Gro serves as the exclusive agent for Monsanto's consumer Roundup branded products in the United States and specified countries. The company maintains an equity interest in Bonnie Plants, a joint venture focused on live plant distribution and marketing. As of September 30, 2025, the company employed approximately 5,200 associates, expanding to roughly 6,900 during peak seasonal periods including approximately 2,100 in-store associates.

The company distributes products through direct sales, e-commerce, brokers, and distributors to home centers, mass merchandisers, warehouse clubs, hardware chains, nurseries, garden centers, and retailers. The Home Depot and Lowe's represent the company's two largest customers, collectively accounting for 52 percent of fiscal 2025 net sales. The North America consumer lawn and garden business exhibits significant seasonality, with more than 75 percent of annual net sales occurring in the second and third fiscal quarters combined.
