The company owns ten insurance subsidiaries that distribute their products exclusively through independent insurance agents and wholesale brokers across the United States. Nine subsidiaries operate as admitted carriers in the standard market, while one functions as a non-admitted carrier in the excess and surplus lines market. The company maintains a financial strength rating of A+ (Superior) from AM Best and ranks as the 34th largest property and casualty group based on net premiums written.
Selective Insurance operates through four reportable segments. Standard Commercial Lines represents 71 percent of total revenues and 79 percent of net premiums written, serving commercial enterprises, nonprofits, and local government agencies across 36 states and the District of Columbia. Standard Personal Lines comprises 8 percent of revenues and 8 percent of net premiums written, operating in 15 states while also serving as the fourth-largest Write Your Own carrier for the National Flood Insurance Program across all 50 states. The E&S Lines segment accounts for 11 percent of revenues and 13 percent of net premiums written, providing coverage in all 50 states for commercial customers unable to obtain standard market coverage.
