What Steel Dynamics does

In the company’s own words

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD) is a leading industrial metals solutions company headquartered in the United States with facilities throughout North America, including operations in Mexico. The company operates at www.steeldynamics.com.

Steel Dynamics operates a circular manufacturing model centered on producing high-quality, lower-carbon-emission steel and aluminum products using recycled scrap as the primary input. The company is one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in North America, with approximately 16 million tons of steelmaking and steel coating capacity and significant metals recycling volumes. The company employs approximately 14,400 full-time team members across its operations.

The company operates through three primary reportable segments. Steel Operations, representing 72% of consolidated net sales, consists of electric arc furnace steel mills producing sheet and long products from ferrous scrap, along with numerous coating, processing, and warehouse operations. The segment includes flat roll divisions with approximately 9.4 million tons of annual production capacity and long products divisions with approximately 4.6 million tons of capacity, serving construction, automotive, manufacturing, transportation, and energy markets. Metals Recycling Operations, accounting for 11% of net sales, involves ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal processing, transportation, and marketing services strategically located near steel mills and end-user consumers. Steel Fabrication Operations, representing 8% of net sales, comprises seven New Millennium Building Systems plants manufacturing steel joist and deck products for the non-residential construction industry.

Steel Dynamics distinguishes itself through an entrepreneurial culture featuring performance-based incentive compensation spanning from plant floor to senior leadership, with approximately 70% of steel and fabrication sales considered value-added products. The company's vertically connected business model creates competitive advantages through internal steel consumption by fabrication operations and synergies between metals recycling and steelmaking operations. The company operates technologically advanced, low-cost facilities utilizing electric arc furnace technology, generating significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional blast furnace production. Recent investments include a biocarbon production facility designed to reduce steelmaking emissions and a new recycled aluminum flat rolled products mill serving beverage can, automotive, and industrial sectors.
