What SunCoke Energy, Inc. does

In the company’s own words

SunCoke Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: SXC) is the largest independent producer of high-quality coke in the Americas, with more than 65 years of cokemaking experience. The company operates through two reportable segments: Domestic Coke and Industrial Services. SunCoke's website is www.suncoke.com.

The Domestic Coke segment consists of five cokemaking facilities in the United States with collective nameplate capacity to produce approximately 3.7 million tons of blast furnace coke annually, plus one facility in Brazil operated under licensing agreements with approximately 1.7 million tons of annual capacity. Coke is produced by heating metallurgical coal in refractory ovens and is primarily used as a raw material in blast furnace steelmaking and foundry iron production. The majority of the company's coke sales are made under long-term, take-or-pay agreements with major steelmakers including Cleveland-Cliffs Steel, U.S. Steel, and Algoma Steel. SunCoke's cokemaking facilities utilize proprietary heat recovery technology that generates steam and electricity for resale, differentiating the company from traditional by-product cokemaking competitors. The company has constructed the only greenfield cokemaking facilities built in the United States in over 35 years and is the only North American coke producer using heat recovery technology.

The Industrial Services segment provides material handling and mixing services through three logistics terminals with capacity to mix and transload more than 40 million tons of coal and other products annually. These terminals include the Convent Marine Terminal, the largest bulk material terminal in the lower United States with direct rail access and a state-of-the-art ship loader. Industrial Services also operates approximately fifteen molten slag removal, handling, and processing sites across the United States, Brazil, Slovakia, and Spain, serving steel manufacturers globally.

As of December 31, 2025, SunCoke employed approximately 2,477 people across six countries, with 53 percent represented by labor unions. The company's competitive advantages include advanced heat recovery technology, proven operational expertise, strategic terminal locations, and long-term customer relationships with integrated steelmakers. SunCoke's facilities have met or exceeded EPA environmental standards including Maximum Achievable Control Technology and Best Available Control Technology requirements.
