What Tesla, Inc. does

In the company’s own words

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) operates at the intersection of electric vehicles, energy storage, and artificial intelligence, with a mission to build a world of amazing abundance. The company's website is located at www.tesla.com.

Tesla operates through two reportable segments: automotive and energy generation and storage. The automotive segment encompasses the design, development, manufacturing, sales and leasing of high-performance fully electric vehicles, including the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, Cybertruck, and Tesla Semi. This segment also includes automotive regulatory credits, used vehicle sales, Supercharger network operations, and automotive insurance services. The energy generation and storage segment includes sales, leasing, and financing of energy generation and storage products such as Powerwall and Megapack batteries, solar panels, and Solar Roof systems, along with related services and energy generation incentives.

As of December 31, 2025, Tesla employed 134,785 people worldwide. The company operates manufacturing facilities in the United States across California, New York, Texas, and Nevada, as well as international facilities in China and Germany. Tesla maintains a global network of company-owned stores and galleries, along with an extensive Supercharger charging network that serves both Tesla and non-Tesla vehicles through the North American Charging Standard.

Tesla's competitive advantages include its vertically integrated business model, proprietary artificial intelligence and vision-based autonomous driving technology, advanced battery and powertrain engineering capabilities, and direct-to-consumer sales strategy. The company leverages real-world AI applications across its vehicle fleet to continuously train and improve autonomous driving systems, with offerings including Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and Robotaxi services launched in June 2025. Tesla's energy business benefits from component-level technologies developed for vehicles, including sophisticated power electronics and battery management systems.

The company emphasizes performance, safety, and cost reduction through continuous manufacturing innovation. Tesla's infrastructure investments include Cortex, its training cluster at Gigafactory Texas for artificial neural network development, and announced collaborations with strategic partners for semiconductor manufacturing. The company sources components from thousands of global suppliers while pursuing vertical integration opportunities, including an in-house lithium refinery that began operations in January 2026.

Fund ownership is a floor, not a census — pensions, insurers and people holding shares directly are not visible here.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
