What Twist Bioscience Corp does
In the company’s own words
Twist Bioscience Corporation (NASDAQ: TWST) operates as a leading provider of synthetic DNA and related life sciences solutions, serving customers across research, development, and commercial applications globally. The company's website is www.twistbioscience.com.
The company has developed a disruptive DNA synthesis platform that industrializes the engineering of biology through proprietary silicon-chip-based technology. Rather than using traditional plate-based synthesis methods, Twist manufactures synthetic DNA by writing over one million oligonucleotide pieces directly onto silicon chips approximately the size of a large mobile phone, reducing chemical usage by an estimated 99.8% compared to conventional approaches. This core platform combines silicon-based DNA writing technology with proprietary software, scalable commercial infrastructure, and an e-commerce platform to deliver high-quality, precise, and cost-effective DNA synthesis at significant manufacturing throughput.
Twist generates revenue through two primary product lines and a services offering. The synthetic biology segment includes synthetic genes, gene fragments, oligonucleotide pools, IgG proteins, and synthetic controls. The next-generation sequencing tools segment provides library preparation kits, exome kits, fixed and custom panels, and workflow solutions for diagnostic applications. The company also offers comprehensive biopharma services for antibody discovery, optimization, and development, including in vivo, in vitro, and in silico discovery platforms. In fiscal year 2025, the company reported revenue of $376.6 million, with healthcare representing $215.1 million, chemicals and materials $93.2 million, academic research $65.9 million, and food and agriculture $2.4 million.
The company serves more than 3,800 customers across academic institutions, biopharmaceutical companies, diagnostic firms, and industrial biotechnology organizations. As of September 30, 2025, Twist employed 979 people across its operations, including 412 in manufacturing and operations, 278 in sales and marketing, 198 in general and administrative functions, and 91 in research and development. The company operates manufacturing facilities in South San Francisco, California and Wilsonville, Oregon, and maintains a global commercial presence through direct sales personnel, e-commerce platforms, and commercial consultants in Europe and Asia.
