What UNIFIRST CORP does

In the company’s own words

UniFirst Corporation (NYSE: UNF) operates as one of North America's leading providers of uniform and workwear rental and sales services, facility management products, and first aid and safety supplies. The company's website is www.unifirst.com.

UniFirst designs, manufactures, personalizes, rents, cleans, delivers, and sells a comprehensive range of uniforms and protective clothing across multiple industry sectors. The company serves over 300,000 customer locations throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. During fiscal 2025, UniFirst manufactured approximately 62 percent of the garments placed in service, with primary manufacturing operations located in San Luis Potosi and Managua, as well as through subcontracted manufacturers. The company also manufactures approximately 99 percent of the mats it places in service at its facility in Cave City, Arkansas.

The company operates through three reportable segments. The Uniform & Facility Service Solutions segment consolidates core laundry operations, manufacturing, and cleanroom services, representing the largest division. The First Aid & Safety Solutions segment sells first aid cabinet services, non-prescription medicines, and safety supplies while providing certain safety training. The Other segment consists of the nuclear decontamination business, which services nuclear power plants and provides specialty garment cleaning for nuclear applications.

UniFirst employs approximately 16,000 team partners across its operations. The company's service model centers on periodic pickup and delivery of soiled uniforms and items, typically on a weekly basis, with cleaned and processed replacements. This centralized approach provides cost advantages and economies of scale, particularly for customers with high employee turnover rates.

The company serves businesses of all sizes across diverse industries including manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and energy sectors. UniFirst operates through written service contracts typically ranging from three to five years in duration. The company competes primarily against Cintas Corporation, Alsco, and Vestis Corporation, with differentiation based on product range, service quality, and pricing. Less than one percent of UniFirst's U.S. employees are represented by unions, and the company maintains an extensive proprietary database of prescreened business prospects to support its professional sales organization.
