What UNITIL CORP does
In the company’s own words
Unitil Corporation (NYSE: UTL) operates as a public utility holding company providing electric and natural gas distribution services across New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine. The company's website is unitil.com.
Unitil serves approximately 215,100 customers through five wholly-owned distribution utilities: Unitil Energy Systems, which distributes electricity in southeastern and central New Hampshire; Fitchburg Gas and Electric Light Company, providing both electric and natural gas service in north central Massachusetts; Northern Utilities, delivering natural gas across southeastern New Hampshire and southern and central Maine; Bangor Natural Gas Company, serving the Bangor area of central Maine; and Maine Natural Gas Corporation, operating in southern and central Maine including the greater Portland region. The company also operates Granite State Gas Transmission, an interstate natural gas transmission pipeline providing transportation services across Maine and New Hampshire.
Electric distribution operations generated approximately 44 percent of total operating revenue, while natural gas operations accounted for approximately 56 percent. The company served approximately 110,100 electric customers and 105,000 natural gas customers as of December 31, 2025. Total operating revenue reached $536.0 million in 2025, with net utility plant investment of $1.8 billion.
Unitil's business model centers on regulated cost-of-service utility operations, where the company recovers distribution costs and earns a reasonable return on capital investment. The company benefits from revenue decoupling mechanisms in Massachusetts and New Hampshire that eliminate dependency on sales volumes, providing revenue stability. Customers in competitive markets can purchase electricity and natural gas from third-party suppliers while Unitil maintains the distribution infrastructure.
The company recently expanded through acquisitions, completing the purchase of Bangor Natural Gas Company in January 2025 and Maine Natural Gas Corporation in October 2025, adding approximately 15,400 customers to its service territory. Unitil employed 595 people as of December 31, 2025, with approximately one-third represented by labor unions. The company operates as a regulated holding company system under Federal Energy Regulatory Commission oversight, with distribution utilities regulated by state public utility commissions in their respective jurisdictions.
