What UPWORK, INC does
In the company’s own words
Upwork Inc. (NASDAQ: UPWORK) operates a global platform connecting businesses with independent talent across multiple engagement models. The company's website is located at www.upwork.com, with its enterprise subsidiary Lifted accessible at www.go-lifted.com.
The company's core business centers on two complementary offerings. The Upwork Marketplace serves as a human and AI-powered work marketplace enabling clients to access highly skilled independent talent across more than 10,000 skills in over 130 work categories, including web and mobile development, design, administrative support, sales and marketing, and customer service. Lifted, launched in August 2025 as a purpose-built enterprise subsidiary, provides scalable solutions for large organizations to source, contract, manage, and pay talent across the full spectrum of contingent work, including independent contractor, agent of record, employer-of-record, staff augmentation, and outsourcing services.
Upwork generates revenue primarily through talent service fees charged as a percentage of freelancer billings, client marketplace fees charged as a percentage of payments to talent, and additional monetization through ads, memberships, and currency exchange services. The Enterprise segment contributes revenue through Lifted's subscription fees, services fees, and managed services offerings. The company also earns interest on customer funds held in escrow.
As of December 31, 2025, Upwork maintained approximately 630 employees and engaged approximately 1,600 independent team members through its platforms. The company serves customers across more than 180 countries and enabled $4.0 billion in gross services volume during 2025. The platform benefits from powerful network effects driven by the scale and diversity of both client demand and global talent supply, supported by proprietary data from millions of completed transactions and AI-driven matching capabilities.
Upwork holds 21 issued U.S. patents and maintains seven registered trademarks in the United States, including Upwork, Elance, oDesk, and Uma. The company operates as an accelerated filer and maintains a subsidiary licensed as an internet escrow agent by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.
