What Vaxcyte, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Vaxcyte, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCVX) is a clinical-stage vaccine innovation company focused on developing high-fidelity vaccines to prevent bacterial diseases. The company leverages its proprietary XpressCF cell-free protein synthesis platform to engineer complex vaccines with enhanced immunological benefits beyond the capabilities of conventional cell-based manufacturing approaches. Unlike traditional methods that rely on random conjugation of antigens to protein carriers, Vaxcyte's site-specific conjugation technology enables precise control over attachment points, optimizing the exposure of critical immune epitopes and maximizing immune response while reducing carrier suppression effects.
The company's primary pipeline centers on pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) candidates targeting the approximately eight billion dollar global pneumococcal vaccine market. VAX-31, a 31-valent broad-spectrum PCV, represents the company's lead program and is designed to provide protection against both currently circulating and historically prevalent pneumococcal serotypes. VAX-31 has received FDA breakthrough therapy designation for prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia in adults and is currently in Phase 3 clinical development. VAX-24, a 24-valent PCV candidate, is in Phase 2 development for pediatric indications. VAX-XL represents a third-generation candidate designed to provide the broadest serotype coverage of any PCV in development.
Beyond its PCV franchise, Vaxcyte is developing VAX-A1, a novel conjugate vaccine candidate for Group A Streptococcus prevention, for which the company plans to initiate Phase 1 clinical studies in 2026. The company previously pursued VAX-GI for shigellosis prevention but paused advancement beyond preclinical development in August 2025 to prioritize resources toward its PCV franchise while preserving future development options.
Vaxcyte has established strategic manufacturing partnerships with Lonza, Sutro Biopharma, and Thermo Fisher Scientific to support clinical development and potential commercial-scale production. The company operates within the rapidly expanding global vaccine market, which is projected to reach approximately 115.77 billion dollars by 2033. More information is available at www.vaxcyte.com.
