Ticker: VMCMaterialsMiningS&P 500The business
Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC) operates as the nation's largest supplier of construction aggregates and a major producer of aggregates-intensive downstream products. The company's website is www.vulcanmaterials.com.
Vulcan produces and sells crushed stone, sand, gravel, asphalt mix, and ready-mixed concrete primarily throughout the United States. The company maintains a coast-to-coast footprint serving 34 of the top 50 highest-growth metropolitan statistical areas across 23 states, Washington D.C., and select international markets. As of 2025, Vulcan operated 425 active aggregates facilities, 71 asphalt facilities, and 76 concrete facilities, with approximately 310,000 acres in its land portfolio containing 16.6 billion tons of proven and probable aggregates reserves.
The company organizes its business into three reportable segments. The Aggregates segment represents the core business and comprises the majority of revenues, producing construction aggregates used as base materials for highways, airports, and railroads, as well as in residential and nonresidential construction. The Asphalt segment produces and sells asphalt mix in six states and provides paving services in select markets. The Concrete segment produces and sells ready-mixed concrete in five states and Washington D.C.
Vulcan's products serve both public and private sector construction markets. Approximately 40 to 55 percent of aggregates shipments historically support publicly-funded construction including highways, airports, and government buildings, while the remainder serves private residential and nonresidential construction. The company serves over 25,000 customers with no single customer accounting for more than 2 percent of total revenues.
The company has grown substantially through strategic acquisitions since becoming public in 1956, completing over 30 acquisitions during the past decade. Notable historical acquisitions include CalMat Co. in 1999, Florida Rock Industries in 2007, Aggregates USA in 2017, and U.S. Concrete in 2021. Vulcan's competitive advantages include its extensive distribution network utilizing trucks, rail, barges, and ocean vessels; strategically located permitted reserves near high-growth markets; operational excellence and safety performance substantially exceeding industry averages; and scale advantages in procurement and administrative functions across its diversified geographic footprint.
