What LEAR CORP does

In the company’s own words

Lear Corporation (NYSE: LEA) is a global automotive technology leader headquartered in the United States with operations at www.lear.com. The company designs, develops, engineers and manufactures seating systems and electrical-electronic systems for light vehicles worldwide, serving all major automotive manufacturers across more than 500 vehicle nameplates.

The company operates through two primary reportable segments. The Seating segment designs and manufactures complete seat systems and key seat components including trim covers, surface materials such as leather and fabric, seat mechanisms, cushioning, headrests and thermal comfort systems encompassing heating, ventilation, active cooling, pneumatic lumbar and massage products. The E-Systems segment produces complete electrical distribution and connection systems, high-voltage power distribution products including battery disconnect units, and low-voltage power distribution products and electronic controllers. Lear maintains 258 manufacturing, engineering and administrative locations across 36 countries.

Founded in Detroit in 1917 as American Metal Products, Lear established itself as a publicly traded company following an initial public offering in 1994. The company expanded significantly through acquisitions including UT Automotive in 1999, which formed the foundation of its E-Systems business. More recent strategic acquisitions have strengthened capabilities in thermal comfort systems, automation technologies and advanced manufacturing, including Kongsberg ICS, Thagora Technology, InTouch Automation, I.G. Bauerhin, WIP Industrial Automation and StoneShield Engineering.

Lear maintains a competitive position as one of the two largest global suppliers of complete seat systems with approximately 26 percent global market share. The company differentiates through vertical integration, just-in-time manufacturing capabilities, proprietary thermal comfort technologies including ComfortFlex by Lear and ComfortMax Seat by Lear modules, and sustainable product innovations such as FlexAir recyclable foam alternatives and ReNewKnit fabrics composed of recycled plastic bottles.

The company's strategy centers on extending market leadership in seating through priceable features, expanding E-Systems margins through focused portfolio management, building operational excellence through automation and digital technologies, and prioritizing employee and sustainability initiatives. Lear's IDEA by Lear initiative reflects commitment to integrating artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced automation throughout operations and administrative functions.
