In the company’s own words
AGNC Investment Corp. (Nasdaq: AGNC) operates as a leading provider of private capital to the U.S. housing market through its website at www.AGNC.com. The company invests primarily in Agency residential mortgage-backed securities on a leveraged basis, enhancing liquidity in residential real estate mortgage markets and facilitating home ownership across the United States.
The company's investment portfolio consists predominantly of Agency RMBS, which are residential mortgage pass-through securities and collateralized mortgage obligations guaranteed by government-sponsored enterprises including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, or by the Government National Mortgage Association. AGNC also invests in Agency multifamily mortgage-backed securities and may invest in non-Agency mortgage-backed securities, credit risk transfer securities, and commercial mortgage-backed securities. The company employs an active management strategy that is dynamic and responsive to evolving market conditions, with portfolio composition and investment strategies tailored to reflect analysis of market conditions and relative values of available options.
AGNC funds its investments primarily through collateralized borrowings structured as repurchase agreements, with leverage typically maintained within six to ten times tangible stockholders' equity. The company operates through its wholly-owned captive broker-dealer subsidiary, Bethesda Securities LLC, which provides access to bilateral and tri-party repo funding and serves as a member of the Fixed Income Clearing Corporation and FINRA.
Organized in January 2008 and commencing operations in May 2008, AGNC qualifies as a real estate investment trust under the Internal Revenue Code and is required to distribute annually ninety percent of taxable income. The company maintains an internally managed structure with the principal objective of generating favorable long-term stockholder returns with a substantial yield component through monthly dividend distributions.
As of December 31, 2025, AGNC employed fifty-four full-time employees. The company maintains robust human capital management practices, achieving zero employee turnover over the past three years and earning recognition as a Great Place to Work and one of Fortune's Best Small Workplaces.
