What Akamai Technologies does
In the company’s own words
Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) operates a massively distributed global infrastructure platform designed to power and protect digital experiences across the internet. The company's mission centers on enabling enterprises to build, secure, and accelerate their applications and digital experiences through a network comprising more than 4,300 edge points-of-presence across over 130 countries and approximately 700 cities, integrated with roughly 1,200 network partners.
The company organizes its business around three core solution offerings: security, cloud computing, and delivery. Security solutions include web application firewalls, bot management, distributed denial-of-service protection, domain name system security, and API security, complemented by the Akamai Guardicore Platform for zero trust network security and microsegmentation. Cloud computing services encompass infrastructure-as-a-service offerings including compute, storage, and networking solutions, along with serverless products and the Akamai App Platform launched in 2024. Delivery solutions focus on web and mobile performance optimization, media delivery, video streaming, and game distribution services.
Akamai serves many of the world's leading corporations including adidas, Adobe, Airbnb, eBay, Electronic Arts, Fidelity Investments, Marriott, NBCUniversal, Spotify, and WarnerMedia, along with U.S. government agencies including the Department of Defense and Department of Treasury. The company maintains no single customer representing ten percent or more of total revenue.
As of December 31, 2025, Akamai employed over 11,000 people across more than 30 countries, with approximately 65 percent located outside the United States and representing over 100 nationalities. The workforce comprises approximately 37 percent engineering and research and development, 26 percent services and support, 17 percent sales and marketing, and 20 percent administrative functions.
The company's website is www.akamai.com. Akamai holds over 560 U.S. patents covering its technology, with patent terms extending to various dates between 2026 and 2044. The company competes on the basis of network scale, reliability, performance, security sophistication, ease of implementation, customer support, and pricing within intensely competitive markets for content delivery, security, and cloud computing solutions.
