What Altimmune, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Altimmune, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALT) is a late clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapies for serious liver diseases. The company's website is www.altimmune.com.
The company's lead product candidate is pemvidutide, a balanced 1:1 glucagon/GLP-1 dual receptor agonist in development for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), alcohol use disorder (AUD), and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Pemvidutide was acquired through the company's acquisition of Spitfire Pharma Inc. in July 2019 and represents the core focus of Altimmune's development pipeline.
Pemvidutide operates through a differentiated mechanism of action that activates both glucagon and GLP-1 receptors with balanced potency. The glucagon component produces direct hepatic effects including reductions in liver fat, inflammation, and fibrosis, while GLP-1 activation mediates appetite suppression, reduction of cravings, and metabolic effects such as weight loss. As of December 31, 2025, over 700 patients have been exposed to pemvidutide across completed and ongoing clinical studies.
The company has advanced pemvidutide through multiple clinical trials demonstrating clinical efficacy and favorable safety profiles. The IMPACT Phase 2b trial in MASH patients showed statistically significant MASH resolution and anti-fibrotic activity at both 24 and 48 weeks. Pemvidutide has received Breakthrough Therapy Designation and Fast Track designation from the FDA for MASH treatment, and Fast Track designation for AUD treatment. The company is preparing to initiate a pivotal Phase 3 clinical trial in MASH in 2026, with ongoing Phase 2 trials in AUD and ALD.
Pemvidutide is protected by a robust patent portfolio covering composition, formulation, and methods of use, with patent expiration dates extending into the 2040s when expected patent term extensions are included. The company also holds exclusive licensing rights to certain intellectual property from Mederis Diabetes, LLC for surfactant functionalized incretin-based peptide therapeutics and has entered into a collaboration agreement with Adocia S.A. for oral administration of pemvidutide.
