(NASDAQ: AOIO) is a vertically integrated provider of fiber-optic networking products serving four primary end markets: internet data center, cable television (CATV), telecommunications, and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). The company designs and manufactures optical communications solutions ranging from fundamental laser components and subassemblies to complete turn-key equipment systems.

The company operates three manufacturing facilities strategically located in Sugar Land, Texas; Taipei, Taiwan; and Ningbo, China, with additional research and development operations in Duluth, Georgia. Applied Optoelectronics' core competitive advantages stem from its proprietary semiconductor laser manufacturing capabilities utilizing both Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) processes, which the company believes are unique in the industry for high-volume communications laser production. The company manufactures the majority of laser chips and optical components used in its products, providing control over quality, costs, and development timelines. The company holds 199 U.S. issued patents, 140 patents in China and Taiwan, and 10 European patents covering laser structures, optical signal conditioning, fabrication techniques, and CATV networking technologies.

The company's vertically integrated model encompasses laser design and fabrication through complete optical system design and assembly. Its highly automated production processes enable scalable manufacturing while maintaining competitive costs, with particular emphasis on U.S.-based production for data center products. Applied Optoelectronics serves major customers including hyperscale data center operators, CATV equipment manufacturers, and telecommunications network equipment manufacturers. The company markets products under the Quantum Bandwidth brand name for direct sales to cable multiple system operators and maintains registered trademarks including APPLIED OPTOELECTRONICS, INC., AOI, and Quantum Bandwidth.
