What Ascent Solar Technologies, Inc. does

In the company’s own words

Ascent Solar Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASLN) operates as a solar technology company specializing in the manufacture and sale of photovoltaic solar modules designed for high-value, weight-sensitive applications where traditional rigid solar panels are unsuitable. The company's website is www.AscentSolar.com.

The company manufactures flexible, durable photovoltaic modules using proprietary Copper-Indium-Gallium-diSelenide (CIGS) technology applied to a flexible plastic substrate. This technology enables the production of lightweight, high-efficiency solar modules with superior power-to-weight ratios compared to conventional rigid panels. Ascent's manufacturing process employs large-format, roll-to-roll production with proprietary monolithic integration techniques that eliminate costly back-end assembly steps required by traditional manufacturers.

Ascent targets specialized markets including space power, aerospace applications, satellites, near-earth orbiting vehicles, fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles, aquatic systems, terrestrial applications, and defense operations. The company positions its products as solutions for applications requiring transformational high-quality, value-added capabilities where weight, flexibility, and durability are critical performance factors.

The company's technology originated from research and development conducted beginning in 1994 at ITN Energy Systems. In 2005, ITN separated its Advanced Photovoltaic Division to form Ascent Solar Technologies, and in 2006, ITN assigned its CIGS photovoltaic technologies to Ascent under a perpetual, exclusive, royalty-free worldwide license. As of December 31, 2025, the company employed 14 full-time and 4 part-time employees.

Ascent's competitive advantages include its pioneering position in CIGS technology on flexible plastic substrates, manufacturing flexibility enabling customized product configurations without production interruptions, integrated roll-to-roll manufacturing processes that reduce costs relative to competitors, and proven research and development capabilities developed over more than two decades. The company protects its intellectual property through patents, trade secrets, and licensing agreements. Ascent continues to invest in research and development to improve cell efficiency, with recent achievements reaching 15.7% efficiency, while pursuing next-generation technologies and additional market applications.
