What AST SpaceMobile, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
AST SpaceMobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTS) is building the first global Cellular Broadband network in space designed to deliver high-speed connectivity directly to standard, unmodified smartphones and 2G/4G-LTE/5G devices. The company's SpaceMobile Service leverages a constellation of high-powered, large phased-array satellites in low Earth orbit using low-band and mid-band spectrum controlled by mobile network operators. The service is engineered to provide cost-effective broadband to end-users outside terrestrial cellular coverage without requiring new equipment or specialized devices.
AST SpaceMobile operates through partnerships with over 50 mobile network operators representing nearly three billion subscribers globally. The company has secured definitive commercial agreements with AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, and Saudi Telecom Company to provide SpaceMobile Service across the United States, Europe, and key international markets. The business model centers on revenue-sharing arrangements with MNOs, who market the service to their existing customer bases rather than AST SpaceMobile competing directly with carriers.
The company has demonstrated significant technological progress through successful testing milestones, including two-way 5G voice calls to unmodified smartphones, download speeds exceeding 21 megabits per second, and the first-ever VoLTE call over satellite. AST SpaceMobile launched five Block 1 BlueBird satellites in September 2024 and commenced its Block 2 satellite deployment in December 2025, featuring the largest commercial phased array ever deployed in LEO at approximately 2,400 square feet.
AST SpaceMobile maintains a global footprint of approximately 450,000 square feet across multiple facilities, including satellite assembly, integration, and testing operations in Texas, battery and propulsion assembly in Florida, avionics testing in Spain, and electronic component assembly in Israel. The company also operates engineering and development centers in the United States, India, and Scotland. The company owns or controls the intellectual property and manufacturing processes for approximately 95 percent of subsystems used in Block 2 satellites, with an IP portfolio comprising approximately 3,850 patent and patent pending claims worldwide, of which approximately 1,900 have been officially granted or allowed.
