What Atara Biotherapeutics, Inc. does

In the company’s own words

Atara Biotherapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATRA) is a leader in T-cell immunotherapy, leveraging its novel allogeneic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) T-cell platform to develop transformative therapies for patients with cancer and autoimmune disease. The company's website is www.atarabio.com.

The company's lead product, tab-cel (tabelecleucel), marketed as Ebvallo in certain regions, has received marketing authorization approval from the European Commission for commercial sale in the European Economic Area, from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency for the United Kingdom, and from Swissmedic for Switzerland. Tab-cel is currently in Phase 3 development in the United States for patients with EBV-associated post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (EBV+ PTLD) who have failed rituximab or rituximab plus chemotherapy. The company partnered with Pierre Fabre Medicament for commercialization of tab-cel globally, with Pierre Fabre responsible for manufacturing, clinical development, and regulatory activities worldwide.

Atara's pipeline includes ATA3219, an allogeneic CAR T targeting CD19 for B-cell malignancies and autoimmune diseases, and ATA3431, an allogeneic dual CAR T immunotherapy targeting both CD19 and CD20. In March 2025, the company announced its decision to pause development of its allogeneic CAR T cell programs and discontinue all CAR T operations, including terminating clinical trials for ATA3219 and ATA3431, while maintaining the patent portfolio for potential future evaluation.

The company's off-the-shelf, allogeneic T-cell platform allows for rapid delivery of therapy manufactured in advance and stored in inventory, with each manufactured lot providing therapy for multiple patients. This approach differs from autologous treatments requiring individual patient cell extraction and modification. Atara selects appropriate cells based on each patient's unique immune profile.

Since inception, Atara has incurred substantial losses and anticipates continued losses for the foreseeable future. The company has earned limited commercialization revenues to date and requires substantial near-term financing to continue operations. In 2025, Atara announced multiple workforce reductions totaling approximately 160 employees and initiated a process to explore strategic alternatives designed to maximize stockholder value, including potential acquisitions, mergers, asset sales, or other strategic transactions.
