What Atea Pharmaceuticals, Inc. does

In the company’s own words

Atea Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: AVIR) is a late-stage clinical biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing, and commercializing novel oral antiviral therapies for serious viral diseases. The company leverages proprietary expertise in virology, medicinal chemistry, and antiviral drug development to create nucleos(t)ide-based treatments targeting single-stranded RNA viruses.

The company's primary pipeline consists of two lead programs. The first is a combination regimen of bemnifosbuvir and ruzasvir for treating hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, currently in Phase 3 clinical development. This regimen is designed as a protease inhibitor-free, short-duration treatment offering potential advantages over current standard-of-care therapies, including an eight-week treatment course for non-cirrhotic patients and a low risk of drug-drug interactions. The second program is AT-587, an investigational nucleotide analog in preclinical development for treating chronic hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in immunocompromised patients, with plans to initiate first-in-human Phase 1 studies in mid-2026.

Atea's HCV Phase 3 program includes two randomized trials: C-BEYOND, enrolling over 880 patients in the United States and Canada with topline results expected mid-2026, and C-FORWARD, enrolling approximately 880 patients outside North America with results anticipated at year-end 2026. The company is targeting submission of a New Drug Application to the FDA in March 2027, pending successful Phase 3 outcomes.

The company's competitive positioning rests on its deep scientific expertise in nucleos(t)ide chemistry and antiviral development, combined with a demonstrated track record of efficiently advancing oral direct-acting antivirals through clinical development. The global HCV market represents a substantial opportunity, with branded HCV therapeutics generating over $2.5 billion in net sales in 2025, while the HEV treatment space remains largely unaddressed with no approved direct-acting antivirals currently available.

Atea operates as a smaller reporting company and is not a well-known seasoned issuer. The company's website is www.ateapharma.com.
