In the company’s own words
Bakkt, Inc. (NYSE: BKKT) builds digital financial infrastructure designed to support institutional participation in the digital asset economy. Founded in 2018 and born out of Intercontinental Exchange, Inc., the company operates primarily through Bakkt Financial Solutions I, LLC, which holds a New York State virtual currency license (BitLicense) and maintains 46 active state money transmitter licenses, enabling operations across all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
The company's long-term strategy centers on three integrated solutions: Bakkt Markets, Bakkt Agent, and Bakkt Global. Bakkt Markets provides institutions with a regulated, plug-and-play platform enabling digital asset trading, stablecoin payment services, custody, and related capabilities. The platform currently facilitates transactions in over 40 digital assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and various altcoins. Bakkt Agent offers programmable access to financial infrastructure through an AI-driven software layer coordinating onboarding, account creation, funding, and global money movement via APIs and configurable workflows. Bakkt Global expands the company's technology and infrastructure into international markets through strategic investments in jurisdiction-specific regulated entities, including an approximately 30 percent investment in Bitcoin Japan Corporation.
During fiscal year 2025, Bakkt underwent significant strategic transformation, divesting non-core assets including its Loyalty business and Bakkt Trust, while streamlining its corporate structure by eliminating its umbrella partnership C-corporation format. The company adopted an updated investment policy enabling capital allocation into digital assets as part of its treasury strategy. In January 2026, Bakkt entered into an agreement to acquire Distributed Technologies Research Global Ltd., a global stablecoin payment infrastructure provider, subject to shareholder approval.
The company operates as a riskless principal in digital asset trading, offsetting customer orders with liquidity providers on a one-to-one basis. Custody services are provided through relationships with Fireblocks Trust Company, Coinbase Custody Trust Company, and BitGo Trust Company, with approximately five percent of customer digital assets self-custodied as of December 31, 2025. The platform generates recurring revenues through platform fees from clients whose customers utilize BFS's trading and payment infrastructure.
