What BioCardia, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
BioCardia, Inc. (Nasdaq Capital Market) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing cellular and cell-derived therapeutics for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. The company's website is www.biocardia.com.
BioCardia operates two primary therapeutic platforms. The CardiAMP autologous mononuclear cell therapy platform targets ischemic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and chronic myocardial ischemia through a mechanism of enhanced microvascular density and reduced fibrosis. This system comprises a cell potency screening test, point-of-care cell processing platform, and the proprietary Helix transendocardial biotherapeutic delivery system. The CardiALLO allogeneic mesenchymal stem cell therapy platform represents an off-the-shelf cell therapy designed for ischemic inflammatory heart failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome, leveraging immunomodulatory mechanisms of action.
The company's CardiAMP Cell Therapy System has completed three clinical trials for ischemic heart failure, including a Phase III pivotal study that demonstrated clinically meaningful improvements in quality of life and functional capacity, particularly in patients with elevated biomarkers of heart stress. The FDA granted Breakthrough Device Designation for CardiAMP in January 2022, representing the first cardiac cell therapy to receive this designation. BioCardia is exploring regulatory approval pathways with both the FDA and Japan's PMDA based on trial results.
The Helix delivery system enables minimally invasive catheter-based intramyocardial therapeutic delivery and serves as a therapeutic-enabling platform for BioCardia's own programs and selective partnerships with other developers of biotherapeutic interventions. The company also manufactures Morph steerable vascular access catheters, with FDA clearance for various vascular procedures.
BioCardia maintains manufacturing capabilities at its Sunnyvale, California facility for allogeneic cell production and device manufacturing. The company partners with Biomet Biologics for the CardiAMP autologous cell processing platform. BioCardia's intellectual property portfolio includes over seventy issued or pending U.S. and international patents covering cell therapies, biotherapeutic delivery systems, and vascular access products, with issued patents expiring between 2027 and 2040. The company targets a concentrated customer base of leading cardiologists at high-volume hospitals and medical centers for commercialization.
