The company's primary focus is Multikine, an investigational Phase 3 immunotherapy candidate designed for treating certain head and neck cancers. Multikine represents a novel approach to cancer treatment, administered locally around tumors and adjacent lymph nodes as a first-line neoadjuvant therapy before standard surgical and radiation treatments. Unlike most cancer immunotherapies that are given systemically after other treatments have failed, Multikine is injected directly into the tumor microenvironment when the immune system is believed to be strongest and most responsive. The company's Phase 3 clinical trial demonstrated a 73 percent five-year survival rate in the target patient population receiving Multikine compared to 45 percent in the control group, with a hazard ratio of 0.35. The target population consists of newly diagnosed, treatment-naive patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who have no lymph node involvement and low PD-L1 tumor expression, representing approximately 100,000 patients worldwide annually.
CEL-SCI also develops LEAPS technology, or Ligand Epitope Antigen Presentation System, with several product candidates under development for treating rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. The LEAPS platform uses heteroconjugates to direct specific immune responses against disease.
The company has established development and commercialization partnerships for Multikine, including agreements with Teva Pharmaceutical for Israel and Turkey, Orient Europharma for multiple Asia-Pacific territories, Byron Biopharma for South Africa, and Dallah Pharma for Saudi Arabia. CEL-SCI operates a dedicated manufacturing facility near Baltimore, Maryland, which was commissioned in February 2024 to support clinical trials and future commercialization. The company was formed as a Colorado corporation in 1983 and has invested over 200 million dollars in developing and validating Multikine's manufacturing process.
