What Cytosorbents Corp does
In the company’s own words
CytoSorbents Corporation (Nasdaq Capital Market: CTSO) operates as a leader in blood purification technologies designed to treat life-threatening conditions in intensive care units and cardiac surgery settings. The company's website is located at http://www.cytosorbents.com.
The company's core technology platform centers on biocompatible, highly porous polymer beads that function as molecular sponges to remove harmful substances from blood through pore capture and surface adsorption, without requiring ligands, antibodies, cells, or biologics. These beads are incorporated into cartridges that integrate with standard hospital blood pumps including dialysis machines, continuous renal replacement therapy systems, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation equipment, and heart-lung machines.
CytoSorbents commercializes multiple products based on this technology. CytoSorb, the flagship product, is approved in the European Union and distributed across more than seventy countries worldwide, with over three hundred thousand devices used cumulatively. CytoSorb addresses cytokine storm and severe inflammation in critical illnesses including sepsis, COVID-19, trauma, burns, and liver failure, as well as removing blood thinners during cardiothoracic surgery. The company also markets ECOS-300CY for ex vivo organ perfusion in transplant applications, VetResQ for veterinary emergency and critical care, and PuriFi, an advanced hemoperfusion pump launched in 2024.
In the United States and Canada, CytoSorbents is pursuing regulatory approval for DrugSorb-ATR, an investigational device designed to remove antithrombotic drugs during cardiac surgery to reduce perioperative bleeding complications. The device has received two FDA Breakthrough Device Designations for ticagrelor and direct oral anticoagulant removal. The company estimates an initial addressable market of three hundred million dollars expanding to over one billion dollars as additional indications are pursued.
CytoSorbents maintains commercial partnerships with major medical device manufacturers including Fresenius Medical Care, B. Braun Avitum, and Terumo Cardiovascular Group. The company has received approximately forty-four million dollars in non-dilutive funding from government agencies including DARPA, the U.S. Army, and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute since 2012. CytoSorb received FDA Emergency Use Authorization in April 2020 for COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure, though the device remains unapproved for general use in the United States.
