What DAWSON GEOPHYSICAL CO does
In the company’s own words
Dawson Geophysical Company (NASDAQ: DWSN) is a leading provider of onshore seismic data acquisition services across North America, operating throughout the continental United States and Canada. The company acquires and processes two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and multi-component seismic data for clients ranging from major oil and gas companies to independent operators, multi-client data library providers, and carbon capture sequestration projects. Its website is www.dawson3d.com.
The company operates two reportable segments: US operations and Canada operations, both generating revenue through identical service offerings utilizing the same equipment and personnel types. Seismic data acquired by Dawson enables clients to identify subsurface conditions favorable for hydrocarbon accumulation, optimize reservoir development and production, delineate existing fields, and support unconventional reservoir analysis including geo-hazard identification and horizontal well steering.
As of December 31, 2025, Dawson employed 269 full-time personnel, including management, sales, and administrative staff alongside crew and support personnel. The company operates 130 vibrator energy source units and approximately 280,000 recording channels, consisting of 178,000 single-channel GSR/GSX boxes and Pioneer nodes plus 102,000 channels of GSR multi-channel boxes. Each crew comprises approximately 40 to 100 technicians with associated vehicles, sensors, recording systems, energy sources, and supporting equipment.
The company's service delivery model operates under either turnkey agreements providing fixed fees per unit of data acquired or term agreements offering fixed hourly, daily, or monthly fees. Most current projects operate under turnkey arrangements, which provide greater profit potential but carry increased risk from crew downtime or operational delays.
In August 2025, Dawson entered an equipment purchase agreement to acquire new single point node channels for approximately $24.2 million, with deliveries occurring throughout the period. The company maintains marketing and operational offices in Midland and Plano, Texas, and in Calgary and Wheatland County, Alberta. Primary competitors include SAExploration Holdings, Echo Seismic, and Paragon Geophysical Services, alongside smaller regional operators. Wilks Brothers, LLC controls approximately 80 percent of the company's combined voting power.
