What Equillium, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Equillium, Inc. (Nasdaq Capital Market: EQ) is a biotechnology company focused on developing novel therapies to treat severe autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. The company's website is www.equilliumbio.com.
Equillium operates as a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company with a pipeline centered on two primary product candidates. EQ504 is a potent and selective aryl hydrocarbon receptor modulator designed with a multi-modal, non-immunosuppressive mechanism of action. The company initially intends to develop EQ504 for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and other gastrointestinal diseases, with potential expansion into inflammatory lung diseases. EQ302 is a first-in-class, selective bi-specific inhibitor of IL-15 and IL-21 formulated for oral delivery, being evaluated for celiac disease and other gastrointestinal indications.
The company acquired exclusive worldwide rights to EQ504 through the October 2024 acquisition of Ariagen, Inc., with potential regulatory milestone payments up to $55 million. Equillium obtained rights to EQ302 through its February 2022 acquisition of Bioniz Therapeutics, Inc., with potential regulatory milestone payments up to $5 million related to this asset.
Equillium's intellectual property portfolio comprises two main wings: a portfolio of patents directed to selective aryl hydrocarbon receptor modulators acquired through Ariagen, and a portfolio of composite peptide antagonist patents acquired through Bioniz. The AhR modulator portfolio includes four patent families with issued patents in the United States, Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Mexico, and New Zealand, with expiration dates ranging from 2037 to 2047. The composite peptide portfolio includes four patent families with issued patents across multiple jurisdictions and expected expiration dates from 2032 to 2041.
The company plans to commence a Phase 1 healthy volunteer study for EQ504 in mid-2026, with data expected approximately six months thereafter. Equillium raised approximately $30 million in gross proceeds through a private placement in August 2025 and an additional $35 million in March 2026. The company believes its cash and cash equivalents will be sufficient to fund operating expenses into 2029. Equillium does not own manufacturing facilities and relies on contract manufacturing organizations for all drug substance and drug product needs.
