What ETSY INC does
In the company’s own words
Etsy, Inc. (NASDAQ: ETSY) operates two-sided online marketplaces that connect millions of creative entrepreneurs with buyers around the world. The company's website is etsy.com.
The company's primary marketplace, Etsy, is the global destination for unique and creative goods from independent sellers, featuring handcrafted pieces, vintage treasures, and items designed by real people. Etsy generated $10.5 billion in gross merchandise sales during 2025, representing 87.8 percent of consolidated GMS. The marketplace hosts 86.5 million active buyers and 5.6 million active sellers, with more than 100 million items available for sale across categories including home and living, jewelry and personal accessories, apparel, craft supplies, paper and party supplies, and toys and games. The Etsy app accounts for 45 percent of GMS transacted on the platform.
Etsy also operates Depop Limited, a leading fashion resale marketplace acquired in 2021. Depop generated $1.1 billion in GMS during 2025, representing 9.0 percent of consolidated revenue. The platform connects 7.0 million active buyers with 3.2 million active sellers in the secondhand fashion market, with 92 percent of transactions occurring on mobile. In February 2026, Etsy agreed to sell Depop to eBay Inc. for $1.2 billion in cash, with closing expected in the second quarter of 2026.
The company generates revenue primarily through marketplace activities including transaction fees, payments processing fees, and listing fees, as well as optional seller services such as on-site advertising and shipping labels. Consolidated gross merchandise sales totaled $11.9 billion in 2025, and the business generated $638.8 million in free cash flow.
Etsy's business model emphasizes four core drivers: innovative technology for search and discovery, disciplined marketing investments, community support systems, and talented people. The company operates with an asset-light model, holding no physical inventory. Etsy previously divested Reverb Holdings, Inc., a musical instrument marketplace, in June 2025, and sold Elo7 Serviços de Informática S.A., a Brazil-based marketplace, in August 2023.
