What E.W. SCRIPPS Co does

In the company’s own words

The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP) operates a diversified media enterprise founded in 1878 with the motto "Give light and the people will find their own way." The company's website is located at http://www.scripps.com.

Scripps operates through two primary reportable segments: Local Media and Scripps Networks. The Local Media segment comprises more than 60 local television stations across more than 40 markets, reaching approximately 25 percent of the nation's television households. These stations include 18 ABC affiliates, 11 NBC affiliates, nine CBS affiliates, four FOX affiliates, 12 independent stations and 10 low power stations. Local Media generated 56 percent of its revenues from distribution agreements with cable operators, satellite carriers and other video programming distributors, while core advertising comprised 42 percent of segment revenues. Political advertising contributed 1.5 percent of Local Media revenues in 2025.

The Scripps Networks segment operates national news outlets including Scripps News and Court TV, along with entertainment brands ION, Bounce, Grit, ION Mystery, ION Plus and Laff. These networks reach nearly every American household through free over-the-air broadcast, cable and satellite distribution, connected TV platforms and digital channels. ION is available in approximately 99 percent of U.S. television broadcast homes and maintains the fifth-largest average prime-time audience among all broadcast networks. Scripps Networks generates revenue principally through advertising sales across upfront, scatter, direct response and connected TV markets.

As of December 31, 2025, Scripps employed approximately 4,600 employees, with approximately 330 represented by labor unions. The company also operates Tablo, a television viewing device enabling households to watch and record free over-the-air and streaming channels. Additionally, Scripps serves as steward of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the nation's longest-running educational programs. In January 2025, the company formed EdgeBeam Wireless, a joint venture with Gray Media, Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair to provide data delivery services leveraging ATSC 3.0 transmission technology.
