What Expensify, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Expensify, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXFY) operates a leading cloud-based expense management software platform designed to simplify financial processes for businesses of all sizes. The company's website is www.expensify.com.
Founded in 2008, Expensify has built a comprehensive platform that automates the collection, processing, auditing and reimbursement of employee expenses. The platform serves over 15 million members across approximately 39,700 companies operating in more than 200 countries and territories. As of December 31, 2025, the company had processed over 1.8 billion expense transactions on its platform.
The core business centers on expense management, which Expensify addresses through its proprietary SmartScan technology that uses optical character recognition to automatically transcribe receipt data. The platform operates on a freemium model with individual free plans (Track and Submit) and paid business subscriptions (Collect and Control) billed monthly based on active members. The company has expanded beyond core expense management to offer complementary financial services including the Expensify Card, a corporate credit card program; Expensify Travel for business travel booking and approvals; and invoicing and bill payment capabilities.
The Expensify Card represents a significant growth driver, with substantially all cardholders operating under an updated program launched in February 2024 through an agreement with The Bancorp Bank. The platform integrates with over fifty business applications including accounting software from Intuit, NetSuite, Xero and Sage Intacct, as well as HR, travel management and banking systems.
Expensify's business model emphasizes viral, bottom-up adoption driven by employee enthusiasm rather than traditional sales approaches. Individual employees download the free mobile application or website signup, and as usage spreads within organizations, decision makers purchase paid subscriptions. The company maintains a flat, generalist organizational structure guided by core values emphasizing employee happiness and long-term vision. The company also operates Expensify.org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on creating a just and generous world through charitable giving and volunteering platforms.
