FreightCar America, Inc. (Nasdaq: RAIL) is a diversified manufacturer and supplier of railcars and railcar components with operations primarily serving the North American market. Founded in 1901, the company designs and manufactures a broad variety of freight car types for transportation of bulk commodities and containerized freight products, including covered hoppers, open top hoppers, gondolas, boxcars, intermodal and non-intermodal flat cars, and specialized coal cars. The company also provides railcar rebody and repair services, railcar conversion services that repurpose idled rail assets back into revenue service, and supplies railcar parts and components.
The company operates through two reportable segments: Manufacturing and Aftermarket. The Manufacturing segment generates revenues primarily from sales of new railcars, used railcar sales, and major conversions and rebodies, while the Aftermarket segment sells forged, cast and fabricated railcar parts, replacement components, and supplies for all railcar types, along with aftermarket services including safety training, inspections, and preventative maintenance. In 2025, the Manufacturing segment represented approximately 95 percent of total revenues, with the Aftermarket segment comprising the remainder.
FreightCar operates a primary manufacturing facility in Castaños, Mexico, certified by the Association of American Railroads, along with additional warehousing and distribution facilities in Pennsylvania and Texas. The company also maintains a sourcing office in China and corporate headquarters in Chicago. As of December 31, 2025, FreightCar employed 1,986 people, with the majority based in Mexico.
The company's customer base consists primarily of financial institutions, shippers, railroads, and other North American buyers. Financial institutions represented 78 percent of total sales in 2025, while shippers represented 16 percent. In 2025, the company delivered 4,125 railcars, comprised of 3,714 new railcars and 411 rebuilt railcars. The company maintains a backlog of firm orders and continues to develop innovative railcar designs and conversion solutions to serve evolving market demands.
