What Genie Energy Ltd. does
In the company’s own words
Genie Energy Ltd. (NYSE: GNE) operates as an end-to-end energy services provider through two primary reportable segments. The company maintains its main operations and investor relations presence at www.genie.com.
Genie Retail Energy (GRE) represents the larger segment, accounting for approximately 95.3% of consolidated revenue. GRE supplies electricity and natural gas to residential and small business customers through multiple retail energy provider brands including IDT Energy, Residents Energy, Town Square Energy, Southern Federal Power, Evergreen, and Mirabito. These REPs operate in deregulated markets across nineteen U.S. states plus Washington, D.C., serving 346,000 meters as of December 31, 2025, representing 329,000 residential customer equivalents. GRE generated revenue of $478.5 million in 2025, comprising $412.8 million from electricity sales and $65.7 million from natural gas sales. The segment's business model involves purchasing wholesale energy commodities and reselling them to customers, with utilities handling distribution, billing, and collections. GRE offers both fixed-rate and variable-rate products, with approximately 44.7% of meters supplied under variable rate offerings as of year-end 2025.
Genie Renewables (GREW) comprises the company's renewable and alternative energy businesses, accounting for approximately 4.7% of consolidated revenue. GREW consists of Genie Solar, a developer and operator of utility-scale and community solar projects; CityCom Solar, which provides customer acquisition solutions for community solar; Diversegy, an energy procurement advisor for industrial, commercial, and municipal customers; and Roded, a pre-revenue startup developing proprietary processes for converting plastic waste into commercial products including recycled plastic pallets.
The company employed 139 people in GRE as of April 2026, distributed across offices in New Jersey, New York, Arizona, and Texas. Genie Energy was spun off from IDT Corporation in October 2011 and became an independent publicly traded company. The company maintains a quarterly dividend program on its common stock and continues evaluating expansion opportunities in deregulated energy markets while developing its renewable energy portfolio.
