The company's principal operating subsidiary is German American Bank, a commercial bank headquartered in Jasper, Indiana, along with German American Investment Services, Inc., a retail brokerage subsidiary. As of February 2026, the company employed approximately 984 full-time equivalent employees and operated 94 retail and commercial banking offices throughout Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, with a significant presence in Columbus and Greater Cincinnati under the Heartland Bank division name.
The company's core business encompasses retail and commercial banking, commercial and agricultural lending, residential mortgage origination and sales, and wealth management services including trust, investment advisory, brokerage, and retirement planning. The company attracts deposits from the general public and deploys those funds into consumer loans, commercial and agricultural loans, commercial real estate loans, and residential mortgages, primarily within its local markets. The company also divested substantially all assets of German American Insurance, Inc. in June 2024 to The Hilb Group of Indiana, LLC for $40 million in cash, while maintaining referral arrangements for a five-year period. Additionally, during mid-2024, the company undertook a strategic portfolio restructuring by selling approximately $375.3 million in available-for-sale securities.
