The company designs, builds, and markets freight railcars across North America, Europe, and Brazil while providing comprehensive wheel services, component parts, maintenance, and sustainable conversion services. Greenbrier's website is located at www.gbrx.com.

The company operates through two reportable segments: Manufacturing and Leasing & Fleet Management. The Manufacturing segment encompasses North American and European railcar production, including covered hopper cars, gondolas, boxcars, tank cars, intermodal railcars, automotive transport equipment, and sustainable conversion services. This segment also includes wheel services, railcar maintenance operations, and component parts manufacturing. The Leasing & Fleet Management segment operates a North American railcar leasing business with approximately 17,000 owned railcars and provides fleet management services including maintenance management, accounting services, regulatory compliance, and proprietary software solutions.

Greenbrier employs approximately 11,000 people globally, with roughly half based in Mexico. The company maintains manufacturing facilities and service operations across multiple continents, serving railroads, leasing companies, financial institutions, shippers, carriers, and transportation companies. The company holds significant ownership stakes in unconsolidated affiliates, including a 60 percent interest in Greenbrier-Maxion, a leading South American railcar manufacturer based in Brazil, and a 41.9 percent interest in Axis, LLC, a joint venture manufacturing axles for domestic and international distribution.

Greenbrier's integrated business model combines manufacturing, leasing, maintenance, and fleet management to provide comprehensive freight car solutions. The company manufactures proprietary products including Maxi-Stack intermodal railcars and Auto-Max automotive transport equipment. As of August 31, 2025, the company maintained a backlog of 16,600 new railcar units with estimated future revenue value of $2.2 billion. The company competes primarily on quality, price, delivery timeliness, innovative product design, reputation, and customer service across all markets served.
