What Hyperfine, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Hyperfine, Inc. (Nasdaq: HYPR) is an innovative health technology company focused on revolutionizing patient care through accessible, affordable, and artificial intelligence-powered portable ultra-low-field magnetic resonance brain imaging. The company's flagship product, the Swoop® Portable MR Imaging® System, produces high-quality diagnostic images at significantly lower magnetic field strength than conventional MRI scanners, enabling brain imaging at the point of care across multiple healthcare settings including intensive care units, emergency departments, procedural rooms, clinics, and physicians' offices.
The Swoop® system received initial FDA 510(k) clearance for brain imaging in 2020 and has since received multiple subsequent clearances, including FDA approval in May 2025 for tenth-generation Optive AI™ software and in December 2025 for eleventh-generation software featuring enhanced diffusion-weighted imaging capabilities for stroke detection. Outside the United States, the system has received marketing authorization in the European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India. The company possesses a portfolio of 197 issued patents worldwide with an additional 160 patent applications pending.
Hyperfine's technology addresses significant limitations of conventional MRI systems, including high cost, complex infrastructure requirements, limited availability, and workflow inefficiencies. The portable Swoop® system eliminates the need for specialized facilities, requires minimal operator training through an intuitive iPad-based interface, and avoids ionizing radiation exposure. The company estimates its total addressable market for device placements in the United States alone exceeds sixteen billion dollars, targeting over 9,600 potential sites of care including 4,000 critical care units and 5,600 emergency departments, plus approximately 2,400 neurology office locations.
Hyperfine generates revenue primarily through direct sales of the Swoop® system accompanied by annual software, service, and support agreements. The company has built direct commercial infrastructure in the United States and maintains third-party distributors for international markets. Founded in 2014 by serial entrepreneur Dr. Jonathan Rothberg, the company has raised equity from leading institutional investors including GV and grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The company also operates Liminal Sciences, a wholly-owned subsidiary founded in 2018, though its vital signs measurement program was suspended in December 2022.
