What IMMERSION CORP does
In the company’s own words
Immersion Corporation (NASDAQ: IMMR) is a premier licensing company focused on haptic technology innovation and education retail operations. The company website is located at www.immersion.com.
Following its June 2024 acquisition of a controlling interest in Barnes & Noble Education, Immersion operates through two distinct segments. The Immersion segment is a leading expert in haptics, holding just under 300 issued or pending patents worldwide that cover digital technologies and touch-related applications across hardware, software, and digital content. The company licenses its patented haptic technology to customers who integrate these innovations into consumer products, enabling tactile feedback experiences in mobile devices, gaming consoles, automotive systems, virtual and augmented reality applications, and wearables. Immersion's licensing model allows customers to deploy haptically enabled devices and content under their own brand names while Immersion generates revenue through fixed, variable, or hybrid royalty arrangements.
The Barnes & Noble Education segment operates one of the largest networks of physical and virtual bookstores serving college and university campuses and K-12 institutions across the United States. As of April 30, 2026, Barnes & Noble Education operated 1,116 total bookstores, comprising 647 physical locations and 469 virtual bookstores. The segment functions as a major textbook wholesaler and provider of inventory management hardware and software solutions. Barnes & Noble Education's strategic focus includes its BNC First Day affordable access course material programs, which deliver required course materials at below-market rates through institutional partnerships, reversing historical declines in course materials revenue at adopting schools.
For fiscal year 2026, Immersion segment revenue from mobile communications represented 28 percent of total royalty and license revenue, gaming and virtual reality represented 45 percent, and automotive represented 15 percent. The company's business model emphasizes licensing intellectual property to drive adoption of haptic technology across expanding markets while leveraging Barnes & Noble Education's established relationships with educational institutions to diversify revenue streams and enhance overall financial performance.
