The distribution and services segment, known as KDS, provides equipment, aftermarket parts, and services for power generation systems, engines, transmissions, reduction gears, electric motors, and specialized electrical distribution and control systems used across power generation, marine, on-highway, oilfield services, and other industrial applications. KDS operates through a network of 62 branch locations across 16 states and Colombia, South America. The segment manufactures and remanufactures specialized equipment including pressure pumping units, electric fracturing systems, and power generation equipment. KDS also rents generators, industrial compressors, lift trucks, construction equipment, and refrigeration trailers.
The company employs approximately 5,233 people, the large majority of whom are based in the United States. The marine transportation segment represented the larger portion of revenues, while distribution and services contributed significantly to overall company performance. Kirby's competitive advantages include its extensive fleet capacity, proprietary vessel management systems, established customer relationships, and diversified service capabilities across multiple industrial markets.
