What LanzaTech Global, Inc. does

In the company’s own words

LanzaTech Global, Inc. (Nasdaq: LNZA) is a carbon management and advanced conversion technology company headquartered in Illinois with operations spanning the United States, China, India, Belgium, and Japan. Founded in 2005 in New Zealand, the company specializes in gas fermentation technology that transforms waste materials and industrial emissions into high-value fuels, chemicals, and industrial inputs.

The company's core technology platform converts gases containing carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen—sourced from steel mill emissions, refinery off-gases, gasified municipal and agricultural waste, and other industrial sources—into ethanol and derivative products through proprietary biological fermentation using specialized microorganisms. This ethanol can be used directly as a fuel or further processed into sustainable aviation fuel, diesel, ethylene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, surfactants, glycols, and other chemical intermediates. The fermentation process also generates protein-rich byproducts utilized as animal feed and industrial protein.

LanzaTech operates through a licensing and co-development business model, generating revenue from royalties, microbe supply, software support, engineering services, equipment sales, and product sales. The company has deployed its technology at six commercial plants globally that have collectively produced over 139 million gallons of fuel-grade ethanol. Additional facilities are in various stages of development across multiple continents.

In 2020, LanzaTech launched and spun off LanzaJet, a sustainable aviation fuel company utilizing the Alcohol-to-Jet process developed with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy. As of December 31, 2025, LanzaTech held 53.16% ownership of LanzaJet. The company maintains strategic partnerships with industry leaders including Mitsui, ArcelorMittal, BASF, IndianOil, and others.

LanzaTech's intellectual property portfolio encompasses 118 patent families with over 800 granted patents and pending applications across the United States, Europe, Asia, and additional jurisdictions, complemented by proprietary trade secrets and technical expertise. The company's competitive advantages include its proven, scalable platform validated through commercial partnerships, ability to process diverse feedstocks, and comprehensive intellectual property protection covering the full spectrum of gas fermentation technology.
