In the company’s own words
Lifecore Biomedical, Inc. (NASDAQ: LFER) operates as a fully integrated contract development and manufacturing organization specializing in the development, cGMP manufacturing, and aseptic filling of complex formulations and highly viscous sterile injectable pharmaceutical products. The company's website is www.lifecore.com.
Based in Chaska, Minnesota, Lifecore maintains three state-of-the-art facilities totaling 250,000 square feet within a two-mile radius, all operating under a single FDA establishment identifier. The company serves as a leading U.S. manufacturer of pharmaceutical-grade, non-animal-sourced hyaluronic acid using a proprietary fermentation-based process developed in 1981. Lifecore manufactures hyaluronic acid in bulk form and as formulated and filled syringes, vials, and cartridges for injectable products addressing ophthalmic, orthopedic, wound care, aesthetic surgery, and drug delivery applications.
The company operates as a single integrated segment combining CDMO and hyaluronic acid manufacturing operations. Lifecore's vertically integrated capabilities extend from supplying raw materials to providing technology transfer, development services, and manufacturing aseptically filled finished sterile injectable products. The company's service offerings include analytical method development and validation, formulation development, sterile filtration, process scale-up, pilot studies, stability studies, and process validation. Manufacturing capabilities include semi-automated Restricted Access Barrier Systems and fully automated aseptic filling lines with isolators supporting both synthetic and biologic drug products.
As of May 25, 2025, Lifecore employed 406 full-time employees, with 194 dedicated to manufacturing, 97 to quality and regulatory affairs, 83 to general operations, and 32 to sales, marketing and administrative activities. All employees are located in the United States with no union representation.
Lifecore's predecessor business commenced in the mid-1960s focusing on microbial diagnostic devices before developing hyaluronic acid capabilities in the early 1980s. Following acquisition by Landec Corporation in 2010, the company operated as a subsidiary alongside lower-margin food businesses until May 2023, when Lifecore divested these food operations to operate as a standalone CDMO. The company changed its corporate name to Lifecore Biomedical, Inc. in 2022 to reflect its strategic focus on contract development and manufacturing services.
