In the company’s own words
McGrath RentCorp (NASDAQ: MGRC) is a diversified business-to-business rental company headquartered in Livermore, California and operating since 1979. The company maintains a website at www.mgrc.com and employs 1,306 people across its operations.
The company operates three primary rental divisions supported by four reportable business segments. Mobile Modular rents relocatable modular buildings designed for temporary classroom space, offices, construction field offices, healthcare facilities, and other applications. The modular fleet comprises 41,722 units with an average cost of $35,612 per unit and achieved 70.7% utilization at year-end 2025. Portable Storage rents steel shipping containers and office containers nationally, operating 42,262 containers with an average cost of $5,801 per unit and 59.0% utilization. TRS-RenTelco rents and sells electronic test equipment nationally and internationally from facilities in Texas and Canada, maintaining inventory with an aggregate cost of $337.1 million and 63.2% utilization.
The fourth segment, Enviroplex, manufactures portable classrooms built to California specifications and sells directly to California public school districts. Classroom rentals and sales to public schools represent a significant revenue stream, comprising 25% of consolidated rental and sales revenues in 2025.
McGrath's business model emphasizes rental revenue growth from an expanding asset base combined with improved gross profit margins. The company recovers its original equipment investment through rental revenues within approximately three to four years depending on product type. When rental equipment is sold from inventory, a substantial portion of the original investment is typically recovered. The company operates large regional sales and inventory centers for modulars and maintains a centralized distribution facility for electronic test equipment, enabling operational leverage through shared senior management and back-office functions.
The rental industry for modular buildings is estimated at over $5.0 billion in aggregate original equipment cost, while the electronic test equipment rental market exceeds $1 billion. The portable storage container market serves diverse segments including construction, retail, commercial, industrial, energy, manufacturing, education, and healthcare sectors. McGrath competes on product availability, quality, service, pricing, and reliability across all three rental divisions.
