What Metallus Inc. does

In the company’s own words

Metallus Inc. (NYSE: MTL) is a specialty steel manufacturer that produces high-performance alloy steel, carbon steel, and micro-alloy steel products using electric arc furnace technology. The company operates as a single reportable business segment, conducting integrated manufacturing operations across multiple facilities. Metallus was incorporated in Ohio in 2013 and became an independent publicly traded company following its spinoff from The Timken Company on June 30, 2014, when Timken transferred its steel business operations to the newly formed entity.

The company manufactures special bar quality bars, seamless mechanical tubing, billets, and precision steel components for demanding applications across industrial, automotive, aerospace and defense, and energy end-markets. Metallus produces more than 500 grades of specialty steel and operates manufacturing facilities in Canton, Ohio, which includes the Faircrest, Harrison, and Gambrinus facilities for SBQ bar, tube, and billet production, as well as downstream component manufacturing facilities in Columbus, North Carolina and Eaton, Ohio. The company maintains annual melt capacity of approximately 1.2 million tons and shipment capacity of approximately 0.9 million tons.

As of December 31, 2025, Metallus employed approximately 1,865 people, with approximately 61.9 percent covered under collective bargaining agreements. The company serves approximately 330 diverse customers globally, with one customer representing 10.6 percent of net sales in 2025. The company's sales force consists largely of engineers supported by metallurgists and technical experts, with approximately 80 percent of products sold directly to original equipment manufacturers and 20 percent through authorized distributors and steel service centers.

Metallus differentiates itself through technical expertise in metallurgy and materials science, with nearly 50 percent of sales representatives and technical service team members holding engineering backgrounds. The company manufactures products from nearly 100 percent recycled steel and operates an integrated raw material recycling program. The company maintains ISO 14001 certification across its domestic steelmaking and processing operations and has committed to 2030 environmental goals including a 40 percent absolute reduction in combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to a 2018 baseline.
