What Murphy USA Inc. does

In the company’s own words

Murphy USA Inc. (NYSE: MUSA) operates as an independent, publicly traded retailer of motor fuel and convenience merchandise across the United States. The company's website is located at https://www.murphyusa.com.

The company was incorporated in Delaware in 2013 as a spinoff from Murphy Oil Corporation, retaining the former U.S. retail marketing business. In 2021, Murphy USA acquired Quick Chek Corporation, a privately held convenience store chain, which expanded its geographic footprint into the Northeast region.

Murphy USA operates a network of 1,800 retail stores located across 27 states, comprising 1,649 Murphy-branded locations and 151 QuickChek-branded stores. The majority of Murphy USA and Murphy Express branded stores are strategically positioned near Walmart locations or in preferred markets throughout the Southeast, Southwest, and Midwest. The company also operates QuickChek convenience stores with and without retail gasoline in New Jersey and New York. During 2025, the company sold approximately 4.8 billion gallons of motor fuel through its retail outlets.

The company's business model centers on a low-cost, high-volume retail strategy featuring smaller store formats, with 73 percent of stores located on company-owned property. Murphy USA sources fuel from multiple suppliers including major oil companies and independent refiners, distributing products through wholly-owned terminals and third-party distribution networks. The company purchases more than 78 percent of its merchandise from Core-Mark, with whom it maintains a supply contract through 2031.

Murphy USA maintains approximately 16,900 employees, including 5,900 full-time and 11,000 part-time workers across stores, its National Contact Center, and corporate headquarters. The company's competitive advantages include strategic proximity to Walmart, a distinctive fuel supply chain with multiple sourcing options, a low-cost operating model, and a resilient financial profile supported by predominantly fee-simple assets.

The company operates as a single reporting segment focused on retail marketing and product supply. Murphy USA has returned substantial capital to shareholders through share repurchases totaling approximately 4.1 billion dollars and increased quarterly dividends throughout 2025.
