ONE Gas provides natural gas distribution services to approximately 2.3 million customers across Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. The company is the largest natural gas distributor in Oklahoma and Kansas and the third largest in Texas by customer count. ONE Gas operates through three divisions: Oklahoma Natural Gas, Kansas Gas Service, and Texas Gas Service, which serve approximately 89 percent, 72 percent, and 13 percent of natural gas distribution customers in their respective states. The company primarily serves residential, commercial, and transportation customers, with major markets including Oklahoma City and Tulsa in Oklahoma; Kansas City, Wichita, and Topeka in Kansas; and Austin and El Paso in Texas.
The company maintains approximately 45,400 miles of distribution and transmission pipelines, including 43,200 miles of distribution mains and 2,200 miles of transmission pipelines. ONE Gas employs approximately 4,000 people, with approximately 700 employees at Kansas Gas Service subject to collective bargaining agreements. The company operates 60.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas storage capacity under contract with maximum daily withdrawal capacity of approximately 1.8 billion cubic feet.
ONE Gas is the successor to Oklahoma Natural Gas Company, founded in 1906, which became ONEOK, Inc. in 1980. The company officially separated from ONEOK, Inc. on January 31, 2014, establishing itself as an independent publicly traded utility. The company's business model centers on regulated rate-of-return utility operations, with revenues recovered through fixed customer charges and variable charges based on usage. The company is subject to regulation by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, Kansas Corporation Commission, and Texas Railroad Commission, with authorized returns on equity ranging from 9.4 percent to 9.8 percent across its service territories.
