What Oportun Financial Corp does
In the company’s own words
Oportun Financial Corporation (Nasdaq: OPRT) operates an intelligent lending and savings platform designed to serve underbanked and underserved consumers across the United States. The company's website is www.oportun.com.
Founded in 2005, Oportun has extended more than $21.8 billion in responsible credit through more than 8.0 million loans and credit cards while helping over 1.3 million people establish credit histories. The company serves approximately 2.8 million members through multiple channels including its mobile app, website, telesales team, and 126 physical retail locations.
Oportun's core product suite includes unsecured personal loans, secured personal loans, and its proprietary Set & Save savings product. Unsecured personal loans range from $300 to $10,000 with terms of 12 to 54 months and fixed interest rates capped at 36% APR. Secured personal loans, collateralized by automobiles, range from $2,525 to $18,500 with terms of 24 to 64 months. The Set & Save product uses machine learning algorithms to help members automate savings by analyzing transaction data and cash flow patterns, with members having saved more than $12.5 billion collectively since 2015.
The company's competitive differentiation stems from its sophisticated use of artificial intelligence and alternative data sets in underwriting. Oportun scores 100% of applicants using billions of proprietary data points, enabling it to serve borrowers typically declined by mainstream financial institutions. The company operates unsecured personal loans in 41 states through direct licensing and partnerships, with secured personal loans available in eight states.
As of December 31, 2025, Oportun employed 2,405 full-time and 83 part-time employees worldwide, including 332 corporate employees in the United States. The company generates revenue primarily from interest income on its loan portfolio and fee income from its financial products. Oportun funds its lending operations through warehouse facilities, loan sales, and securitization transactions with bank partners, including Pathward N.A., which originates a substantial portion of the company's loans.
