What PACIFIC BIOSCIENCES OF CALIFORNIA, INC. does

In the company’s own words

Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. (NASDAQ: PACB) is a premier life science technology company that designs, develops, and manufactures advanced sequencing solutions enabling scientists and clinical researchers to improve their understanding of the genome. The company's website is www.pacb.com.

The company's core offering is HiFi long-read sequencing technology built upon proprietary Single-Molecule Real-Time (SMRT) sequencing systems. This technology enables highly accurate detection of nucleotide sequences and epigenetic status of individual DNA molecules, delivering long, highly accurate reads that support analysis of complex genomic and transcriptomic features difficult to resolve using conventional short-read sequencing technologies. Pacific Biosciences' product portfolio includes sequencing instruments such as the Revio and Vega systems, nanofluidic chips called SMRT Cells, reagent kits for DNA extraction and library preparation, and application-specific sequencing workflows.

The company serves a diverse customer base including academic and governmental research institutions, commercial testing and service laboratories, genome centers, public health labs, hospitals and clinical research institutes, contract research organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and agricultural companies. Principal markets for the company's solutions include human genomics for rare disease research, infectious disease and microbiology, oncology research, and plant and animal sciences.

As of December 31, 2025, Pacific Biosciences employed 485 full-time employees, with the majority based in California. The company maintains ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 certifications for its key manufacturing and service facility in Menlo Park, California, and utilizes domestic and international subcontract manufacturers for components.

The company's intellectual property portfolio includes 450 issued U.S. patents, 69 pending U.S. patent applications, 318 issued foreign patents, and 104 pending foreign patent applications covering SMRT sequencing technology, ZMW arrays, reagents, and data analysis processes. In January 2026, Pacific Biosciences completed the disposition of certain short-read DNA sequencing technology assets to Illumina Cambridge Limited for $50 million in cash, allowing the company to focus on its core HiFi long-read sequencing platform and clinical applications.
