What Penumbra Inc does
In the company’s own words
Penumbra, Inc. (NASDAQ: PEN) is the world's leading thrombectomy company focused on developing innovative technologies for challenging vascular medical conditions. The company designs, develops, manufactures, and markets novel medical devices used by specialist physicians to treat ischemic stroke, venous thromboembolism including pulmonary embolism, acute limb ischemia, deep vein thrombosis, coronary disease, and various other vascular disorders. Founded in 2004, Penumbra operates as a single reportable segment with two primary product categories: thrombectomy and embolization and access.
The thrombectomy product line, which generated approximately 67% of revenue, includes the Indigo System for peripheral thrombectomy applications and the Penumbra System for neuro thrombectomy procedures. These systems leverage computer-assisted vacuum thrombectomy technology to remove blood clots with speed and safety. The embolization and access product line, representing approximately 33% of revenue, comprises peripheral and neuro embolization products such as the Ruby Embolization Platform and Penumbra Coil families, along with access products including the Neuron and BENCHMARK catheter families. The company also offers neurosurgical tools including the Artemis Neuro Evacuation Device.
Penumbra sells its products directly in the United States, most of Europe, Canada, Australia, and Singapore, with approximately 90% of revenue from direct sales and the remainder from international distributors and licensing arrangements. The company maintains manufacturing facilities in Alameda and Roseville, California, where substantially all products are produced in-house. The company holds 125 issued patents globally and 235 foreign trademark registrations supporting its proprietary technology portfolio.
On January 14, 2026, Penumbra entered into a merger agreement with Boston Scientific Corporation valuing the company at approximately $14.5 billion, with the transaction expected to close by the end of 2026. More information is available at www.penumbrainc.com.
