What SERVICE CORP INTERNATIONAL does

In the company’s own words

Service Corporation International (NYSE: SCI) operates as North America's largest provider of deathcare products and services through an extensive network of funeral service locations and cemeteries. The company maintains operations at 1,485 funeral service locations and 500 cemeteries across 44 states, eight Canadian provinces, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, serving customers through approximately 25,200 employees. The company's website is located at www.sci-corp.com.

SCI's core business encompasses funeral services, cemetery operations, and related merchandise and services. The company operates funeral service locations that provide professional services including arranging, directing, embalming, cremation, and memorialization services. Funeral merchandise offerings include burial caskets, urns, outer burial containers, flowers, and various cremation receptacles. Cemetery operations provide interment rights for developed lots, lawn crypts, mausoleum spaces, and cremation niches, along with associated merchandise and services such as memorial markers, graveside services, and merchandise installation.

The company operates under several recognized brands including Dignity Memorial, the first transcontinental deathcare brand in North America, along with National Cremation Society, Neptune Society, Trident Society, Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services, Funeraria del Angel, and Making Everlasting Memories. SCI maintains the largest number of combination locations in North America, where funeral service locations operate adjacent to or within cemetery properties, creating operational synergies and customer convenience.

SCI's business model combines at-need services, provided at the time of death, with preneed sales where customers contractually arrange services and merchandise in advance. The preneed backlog of unfulfilled contracts totaled approximately seventeen billion dollars, representing significant future revenue. The company estimates its market share in the North American deathcare industry at approximately eighteen percent.

The company's competitive advantages include its unparalleled geographic network, scale-driven procurement efficiencies, established brand recognition, and sophisticated sales organization. SCI has pursued strategic acquisitions and organic growth through new location development, most recently acquiring twenty-two funeral service locations and two cemeteries during the fiscal year. The company maintains approximately ninety percent ownership of its real estate and buildings, with cemeteries containing approximately thirty-six thousand developed and undeveloped acres.
