What SpyGlass Pharma, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
SpyGlass Pharma is a late-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to transforming treatment paradigms for patients with chronic eye conditions through long-acting, sustained drug delivery systems utilizing approved medicines. The company's lead product candidate, the Bimatoprost Drug Pad-IOL System (BIM-IOL System), comprises novel proprietary drug pads attached to an intraocular lens designed to be implanted during routine cataract surgery to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The system delivers three years of bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog approved by the FDA in 2001 for topical use.
In clinical trials, the BIM-IOL System has demonstrated a mean intraocular pressure reduction of 37 percent at 36 months with no product-related adverse events, and 95 to 97 percent of treated patients were off all topical intraocular pressure-lowering drops at follow-up assessments. The company initiated two registrational Phase 3 clinical trials in July 2025, each expected to enroll approximately 400 patients across 45 sites, with enrollment completion anticipated in 2027 and a planned 505(b)(2) New Drug Application submission to the FDA in 2028.
SpyGlass Pharma also is developing a non-intraocular lens-based, ring-shaped sustained-release implant with bimatoprost for standalone procedures and retreatment of patients. The company's SpyGlass Platform is designed to integrate approved medicines into sustained-release systems for various chronic eye conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, postoperative eye care, and chronic uveitis.
The company estimates the total addressable market for the BIM-IOL System in the United States at approximately thirteen billion dollars, based on approximately one million glaucoma and ocular hypertension patients expected to undergo cataract surgery annually. The company was founded in 2019 and has raised approximately two hundred million dollars in financing from premier investors including New Enterprise Associates, RA Capital Management, and Vensana Capital. SpyGlass Pharma's leadership team includes executives with extensive experience developing and commercializing ophthalmic pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
