What STAAR SURGICAL CO does
In the company’s own words
STAAR Surgical Company (NASDAQ: STAAR) designs, develops, manufactures, and sells implantable lenses for refractive eye surgery. The company's website is www.staar.com.
STAAR generates virtually all revenue from sales of Implantable Collamer Lenses, or ICLs, which represent approximately 100 percent of consolidated net sales. The company's ICL product portfolio includes the EVO family of lenses, EVO+ ICL, EVO Visian ICL, and EVO Viva, which features an extended depth of focus optic designed to treat myopia with presbyopia. ICLs are phakic lenses implanted into the eye without removing the natural crystalline lens, distinguishing them from laser-based refractive procedures like LASIK. All ICLs are foldable, allowing minimally invasive implantation through small incisions, and are reversible, meaning they can be removed if desired. The lenses are made from Collamer, STAAR's proprietary collagen copolymer material that provides biocompatibility and flexibility. In February 2026, STAAR announced it had sold more than four million ICLs worldwide.
The company operates as a single reportable segment focused on ophthalmic surgical products. STAAR maintains significant global operations with principal manufacturing facilities in Monrovia, California, and expanded manufacturing capabilities in Nidau, Switzerland. The company also operates administrative and distribution facilities in Japan, Germany, Spain, Singapore, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, India, and other locations. STAAR sells products directly through its own representatives in seven countries and through a combination of direct and independent distributors in additional markets, with products available in more than eighty-five countries worldwide.
For fiscal 2025, the company generated ninety-one percent of worldwide revenue from product sales outside the United States. Two China distributors accounted for approximately thirty-two percent of consolidated net sales. The company's intellectual property portfolio includes approximately eighty-seven United States and foreign patents with thirty patent applications pending. STAAR has been dedicated solely to ophthalmic surgery for over forty years and believes its EVO ICL is the only posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens approved by the FDA for marketing in the United States and the world's largest selling phakic IOL.
