Founded in 1843 by Frederick T. Stanley and incorporated in Connecticut in 1852, the company merged with The Black & Decker Corporation in 2010 to form its current entity. The company operates through two reportable business segments. This segment carries iconic brands including DEWALT, CRAFTSMAN, STANLEY, BLACK+DECKER, and CUB CADET. The Engineered Fastening segment generated $2.0 billion in revenues representing 13% of total revenues and serves customers in automotive, manufacturing, electronics, construction, and aerospace industries.

The company maintains significant customer relationships with major retailers, with The Home Depot and Lowe's accounting for approximately 15% and 12% of consolidated net sales respectively in 2025.

The company has undergone substantial portfolio transformation through strategic divestitures, including the sale of its Convergent Security Solutions business, Mechanical Access Solutions business, Oil & Gas business, Infrastructure business, and most recently a definitive agreement to sell its Consolidated Aerospace Manufacturing business. The company completed a Global Cost Reduction Program generating approximately $2.1 billion in pre-tax run-rate savings by the end of 2025, exceeding its original $2.0 billion target.
